Sorry, didn't write yesterday. The weather changed from dreary and cloudy to warm-ish and sunny, so we spent much of our late afternoon outside.
School day started with Bell Work and homework grading. Sophie is struggling with reading directions fully. Or she thinks she knows what the directions are going to ask her to do, so she doesn't read them at all. All of her "fixes" have been caused by not reading the directions. We had been preparing for her first homeschool spelling test. She does very well. She especially likes it when she gets to write on the whiteboard. She added a little note at the bottom of the spelling practice while I "wasn't looking". She's a goofball.
With all of the new materials given to us by Sophie's teachers, it was important that we organized ourselves. I understand that this whole shift to homeschooling was not something that teachers would think to prepare for, but giving us stacks of worksheets wasn't helpful. These worksheets were separated by "Week 1", Week 2" and "Week 3", with no directions. Maybe it's just me, but I would have appreciated a little more direction. I think about the parents that aren't teachers, or the parents that are continuing to work during this time. My daughter would have been unable to complete anything on her own, or even work on it without constant supervision. I took it upon myself to break up all the assignments by days of the week. Sophie knows to get into the cabinet, get the folder marked with the day of the week we are in and begin working. After we complete schooling for the day, the completed papers go in their respective "Completed" folders.
After Bell Work, reading and spelling it was PE/recess time. We did some hula hoop and relay races today. I think I pulled my hamstring in the relay races. Really difficult to walk this morning and very painful. Yes, I'm an idiot. Apparently lunges need to be preceded by ample stretching.
After PE/recess and lunch, we did Lunch Doodles with Mo and Math. Math was flashcards and number sentences.
When all this ends, we are taking all of the lunch doodles and making a big poster of everything we've doodled.
After doodles, the weather turned nice. Sophie went to grandmas house so I could get some work done. They took a walk down by the pond, drew with sidewalk chalk and played with Mato. After all the adventure, we sat in the driveway and drank. (Don't worry, we sat 6 feet apart from each other.)
My day ended with a Zoom Happy Hour with the Iowa Women's Jazz Orchestra. It was nice to talk to everyone and hear how different school districts are handling the pandemic. It was nicer to talk to people and to be social. Hope that our summer gig doesn't get cancelled. I miss performing with these amazing women.
I miss my students. I miss working with my band. I'd risk getting COVID-19 to see them again.
