Diary of a Band Director - Homeschool Day 3

So Happy It's Thursday. It's rainy and cold again today. No recess. I'm gonna start cutting off limbs with a butter knife. (Kidding, but I need some sun like nobody's business.)

School had a delayed start due to fog. Got a text notification from myself at 7:00 am and promptly went back to sleep. Good 'ole Benton county...

9:00 am - School starts with Bell Work and Today Is questions.

Sophie wanted to listen to music as we did our Bell Work. Just searched YouTube for instrumental music, and found a piano compilation of Disney tunes. It was delightful. I checked her homework while she did Bell Work.

At her "normal" school, her teacher picks one student per day to be "Student of the Day". This student gets to do the calendar, sit at the teacher's desk, write on the whiteboard. Sophie's realization today was quite adorable.

"Mommy! You know what?! When we school at home, I'm the student of the day everyday!" Yes, sweet girl. You are.

9:30 am - Math - Still working on numbers from 100 - 200 (and higher). Today was a counting by 5's day. She struggles a bit at 200 and 205. The zero in the middle throws everything in a tizzy.

For "recess" and a math "extension", we played Yahtzee. She beat me by one hundred. ; )

10:00 am - Reading - Today was Matthew 19 and the Lesson was "Blessings". I struggled with this today as I find it hard to pick out Blessings in my life right now. The world is in chaos, I don't get to see and work with my students, personally I am a hot mess, and every day is an unknown. But without all those crazy things, I wouldn't get to spend all of this time with Sophie. When she grows up, she probably won't remember COVID-19, and all the insane things happening around the world. She WILL remember our time together. Having school in her "classroom" downstairs, and the fun we had together learning and being together.

10:30 am - Snack time and science experiment prep.

10:45 am - "Lab" time in Science

We've talked about Matter this week and it's 3 forms: solid, liquid and gas. This experiment is called Oobleck. Oobleck is a form of matter that is both a solid and a liquid. It has just 2 ingredients; corn starch and water. We added food coloring to make it "more fun".

Here is her Lab Report.

It looked like; water, it was blue

It felt like; slime, but hard and then like watery when you didn't squeeze

It smelled like; corn bread (???!!!)

12:00 - Lunch - We eat in our "classroom", usually watching a video. Today was a couple of Pixar "shorts". One called La Luna was adorable. YouTube is a great resource right now.

12:45 - Lunch Doodles with Mo Willems - Today's doodle was "Impossible Houses"

1:30 - Piano Lessons and Fine Arts Night practice - Sophie chose to sing at Fine Arts Night this year. My guess is, this will eventually be cancelled too, like everything else, but it hasn't yet, so we will continue to practice. And I can't tell her another event is cancelled.

I still miss recess and PE. We might do some dance videos here in a bit because her dance lessons and dance recital have been cancelled. There goes a crap ton of money on dance costumes, new dance shoes and not to mention tuition for classes. Tiny basketball is over, and soccer is "supposed" to start soon. My guess is that will get cancelled too. Wonder if we'll get our money back...

I'm starting to feel a bit of depression or something. I need some sun or a walk or something outside. CCA is letting teachers retrieve needed teaching materials from our classrooms and offices tomorrow for one hour. Going to go pick up everything I need to try to teach band from home. What an exciting adventure...

Well, school let out early. Damn fog.
