Diary of a Band Director - Homeschool Day 2

Day 2 - How is it only Wednesday? Dreary, rainy day. No outside recess. This native is getting restless. I live for recess (More like recess duty. See previous diary entry.)

9:30 am - "Bell" work and "Today Is" questions. Got some great bell ringer worksheets from a friend from the middle school I work at. Her daughter is the same age as Sophie, so we are in similar situations with our very eager to learn children.

9:45 am - Math time. We did number charts, up to 300. I very quickly realized that Sophie did not know how to count after 100. SO, we counted to 300 using 10's today. Filled in some number charts using 10's. Then, this next thing blew my mind. Now, math was never really a problem for me growing up, I just didn't care for it. To be honest, it was boring. I hated math homework, and everything about it. But, I don't remember being taught like this. Sophie calls this "Doubles + 1". (In my head that means, something like 10+10+1 = 21. Nope, not at all.) . Here is Doubles + 1;

MIND. BLOWN.

10:30 - After Math it was time for a break. Too early for beer, and no Bailey's for my coffee. I just got shown up by a 6 year old doing math, what's a girl to do? Bloody Mary. Sophie got some muffins for a mid morning snack and I wallowed in homeschool teacher doubt with my dear friend Mary.

10:45 am - Reading and Writing

For Fun reading today was a book called Lost and Found about a penguin and his friend who travel to the south pole in search of friendship and the Groovicorns.

The Reading Comprehension came from a packet of stories and questions about textual evidence. We completed 2 of the stories together and assigned one as "homework".

Matthew 28 was the Bible reading today and we talked about the Resurrection. The plan after lunch was to make "resurrection bags". During the next few weeks we will be adding things to our resurrection bags that remind us of the Easter season.

These things we have drawn on little pieces of paper and placed in the bags. When we think of things that remind us of Easter, we stop what we are doing, write or draw it on a small piece of paper, and put it in our bags.

Sophie wanted to make one for Grandma and Grandpa, which we plan to deliver later tonight.

11:45 am - Science

Today we learned about Matter. Generation Genius is a website with many science educational videos. Each video has an experiment/activity with it. Because it is not feasible to do a science experiment every day, Sophie decided that Thursdays are "Lab" days. (Okay, not her term, but whatever.) Tomorrow we are making Oobleck; matter that is a solid AND a liquid.

12:15 - LUNCH - The Doodles with Mo was really slow today, so we watched the San Diego Zoo's livestream of the penguin habitat.

1:00 pm - Doodle with Mo! Today was an animation day and a Piggy day. Two doodles in one sitting. We enjoyed both!

The last thing on the list for today is piano lessons. I quickly gave up on trying to be a general music teacher. Figured I should stick with what I know, instrumental music. Now, I am no piano player, but here goes nothing.

Today was a good day. I need it to be sunny outside so we can run and play. I can't watch the news anymore. As for me and my house, we will shelter in place.

Much love.
