Diary of a Band Director - Homeschool Day 1

Well, it's official. School has been cancelled for 4 weeks. My district is thinking about going to online learning, but hasn't set up parameters yet. This week for us is technically Spring Break, so we want to give our students their break, and move online starting next week. When we figure that out, I am will be sure to blog.

But these diary posts will be about my daughter. She is 6, in the first grade at a Lutheran school in the area. Her school has also been cancelled for 4 weeks. She is quite sad as she loves school, her teacher, seeing her friends, and all that being a first grader entails. In order to keep up on her learning, we thought it best to start to homeschool as much as possible. This is day 1;

8:30 am - Breakfast - Not in a hurry. I don't really know what I am doing. Must fuel up. She is WAY too excited for this...

9:00 am - School starts - Never thought my band director planner would be used to teach First Grade. This takes a bit of planning. Math is first on the plan. We count forward and backward from 20 using 1's, 2's and 5's. We create number charts using those same intervals. We add and subtract using marbles and the number charts. Gave her some homework problems that she has described as "hard".

(Yes, that is a care kit cloth from a beginning brass instrument. Don't judge, it's what I had.)

9:40 am - Math time over. Now reading. Today was Genesis 31 - 33 and the Lesson was "Forgiveness". Lots of great reading and questions. Then she read Ice Cream from Frog and Toad Collection and I read a Princess Tiana story.

10:20 am - Writing - Nouns, Verbs and Adjectives and Mad Libs

Talked about what nouns, verbs and adjectives were. Using all of the words, we created a story Mad Lib style.

Sophie has been talking about a trip to Disney for quite some time. Her Mad Lib was about a trip to Disney with her bestie.

10:45 am - Science Art! We did some paper towel art today. These sure are fun. Thanks Facebook for the inspiration.

11:10 am - Science - The Water Cycle - evaporation, condensation and precipitation - video

11:30 am - Recess (also known as taking the dog for a walk) She picked up "treasures" on the walk. (And no worries, she washed her hands after, multiple times)

12:15 pm - Lunch

1:00 pm - Lunch Doodles with Mo Willems (so much fun with one of her favorite authors)

1:30 pm - PE Obstacle Course - It was a sunny, warm-ish day, so we got to be outside.

2:00 pm - Recess - Yes, that's what you think it is. Recess duty is tough business.

2:30 pm - Music class! Now before you judge too harshly, yes, I teach music, but I DO NOT teach general music. General music teachers are like unicorns. Magical, sparkling, unicorns. I am not a unicorn, I'm a mule, a jackass if you will. I am not good at the general music stuff. This was the best I could do...

After music, we did a recap of learning for the day, read another book together and called it a day. I'm ready for a nap, or another beverage. Teaching first grade is no easy task.

Until tomorrow, COVID-19 Homeschool Adventures.
